Daddy's accomplishments

As a mother and wife, I am really proud of my husband Trevor Ng.

At about 10 years ago, Trev decided to start his company just because he didn't find that ideal job when he returned from his overseas education. I was there when he made a decision to do this business, all by himself. I saw how he went to his office diligently daily and figuring out the technicalities of "A" business. Business in many aspect, from those who are in corporate, seems like a bed of roses with no complicated politicking and politics. But I beg to differ because business has a wide spectrum of learning and the learning curve is steep. Books and practical are totally different, a struggle because a entrepreneurial goes through emotions, money factors and the thought of "this may not be what I should do" Do you agree with me?

Walker Safety Products PTE LTD was incorporated in Singapore in 2003 is a distributor and supplier of a wide range of intelligent fire safety and security products commonly used for residential, commercial and industrial purposes.

The company's prime focus is to provide total solutions to the fire and security protection industry by striving to ensure the highest safety and quality standard whilst maintaining competitive prices.  Our areas of specialisation can be clearly categorised into 2 parts of being Fire Protection and Security.

With a customer base spanning the whole of ASEAN and parts of the Indian Continent, we pride upon ourselves as a professional outfit that is knowledgeable in its trade and is reasonable in fulfilling enquires from customers. We have been proven to ensure product reliability and quality with realistic delivery time to meet our customers' requirements. We stay committed in maintaining long term relationship with both our valued customers and suppliers!

I have seen how he has persevered for the last 10 years and may I had, I deserve a pat on my shoulder for walking through this process with him. It was not easy when we didn't have enough to pass through our days. Didn't seem like it now that you look at us right? I can only say it was a tough road that we chose that time, but I believe that God gave us those challenges to make us better lovers and greater parents.

We went for the Promising SME 500 Gala 2015 and here are some photos to share with you.

Excerpts from the article:

With a background in business marketing and real estate, Mr Trevor Ng likens his career- changing switch to the business of safety and fire protection ti that of "setting foot into a big jungle" " I even lacked the basic knowhow in either mechanical or electrical engineering, and here I was treading in technical things like air sampling detection systems and CCTv- related products" says Mr Ng, who has previously found scant joy trawling a lacklustre job market.

But rather than be a prey in an an unforgiving environment, he went on the offensive. Walker Safety Products was established on 2003 and Mr Ng wisely chose to stick to what he knew best. He restricted himself to supply and distributed and focused on exporting to the South-East Asian market, a risky proposition at best considering the fluctuating economy during tat particular period.

The big break arrived in 2006, when a major disaster in Vietnam resulted in the enactment of a law decreeing that all buildings had to contain fire safety equipment - business boomed as the company's annual turnover soared to $600,000, with Mr Ng expanding his team and products range significantly Waker Safety now has representative supplying and installing its fire and security products - spanning high-ends brands such as Siemens, Paradox Security Systems and Wagner Gmbh- in countries like Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

In the coming years, Mr Ng hopes to preside over annual growth in the 15-20% range, with the ultimate dream of selling the company and starting a brand-new firm. The metaphorical jungle was not so big after all.

Up close and personal

What made you take the brave step of starting your business?

My dad cajoled me to do something myself, and also because I simply couldn't find the right job. Even when I eventually settled into what was a perfect fit, my contributions were hardly recognised. In my own company, all the decision-making, ideas and strategies implemented are done by a team or myself, so when it becomes successful, I derive much satisfaction and a sense of achievement.

You were entering uncharted territory. What were some challenges you faced?

Trying to procure financial resources was tough as no local banks were wiling to render financial aid. As a new start up, people has little faith in me and I decided to take a small loan from my dad. The first two and a half years, I could not even draw a proper basic salary because of slow business, while at the age of 28, earning the respect of my clients and staff was not easy, let alone selling something to them.

What are some of your best selling products?

The security intrusion alarm products for houses, retailers/boutiques, banks and convenience stores. As for the fire products, it has to be the fire- extinguishing products, which are commonly used in sever rooms, substations, banks, and even Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) rooms.

What would you say are the key factors in staying competitive in this particular industry?

Responsibility remains high on our list, because in this business, ensuring that he products are installed, maintained and used correctly are of paramount importance, Selling quality products - those that are able to last a lifetime- comes into play, and because I deal with wide variety of cultures around the region, I have to be culturally sensitive in my business dealings and remain 100% honest. Its our business to protect and save lives and assets, safety and security must never be compromised.
